What Are The Health Benefits of Biltong?

Biltong Health Benefits

Most people have heard of biltong, but not everyone is aware of the great health and nutritional benefits contained in South Africa’s beloved meaty snack.

With diets such as paleo, keto and a high protein/low carb being as popular as ever right now, there’s no better time to learn about the health benefits of biltong and get snacking!

Here’s what you need to know.

High In Protein

Biltong is high in protein. A 25-gram serving will provide you with 50 per cent of your recommended daily protein requirement. Protein is essential in helping to grow and maintain muscle so it’s a great snack for gym lovers. It is also ideal either for a pre or post-workout snack so it’s very versatile and easy to carry around in a gym bag or hiking up a mountain!
Biltong is a rich source of iron – something that many people are lacking in their diets. Iron deficiency typically can cause fatigue and an increased heart rate. Dieticians have been known to recommend increasing the intake of foods such as biltong when they are struggling with anaemia. An added benefit of biltong as a meat snack is that it requires no cooking or preparation so it can just be eaten straight from the packet on the go!
Biltong is high in Vitamin B12. This is an essential vitamin that is needed within the body to maintain healthy nerve tissue health, cell replication, brain function and the production of red blood cells. The effects of Vitamin B12 can also be seen outside the body as it helps to prevent dry irritable skin, reduce hair breakage and help nails to become stronger too!

Low In Fat

Unlike many other cured meats, biltong is extremely low in fat – there is only 3% fat in one 25-gram serving. On top of that, only natural ingredients are used to make the South African snack.
Good news for those with gluten intolerance – biltong is naturally gluten-free!
Zinc is essential for good health - it possesses great immune-boosting properties. It helps to keep colds at bay and to boost the immune system. The recommended daily allowance of Zinc for humans is 15mg and you can receive part of that from consuming biltong.
